South Portland, Maine (October 21, 2014) – WJBQ Morning Show hosts Meredith Manning, Lori Voornas and Jeff Parsons arrived at the Maine Mall in South Portland at 6:00am on October 15, and vowed not to leave until they collected half a million bottles and cans for their yearly Cans for a Cure fundraiser. Desiring to make an impact locally, all of the money raised was earmarked for two Maine-based organizations. The Maine Cancer Foundation will be using their fifty percent of the monetary donations toward finding a cure for breast cancer and The Cancer Community Center will be putting their half of the money to work helping those affected by the disease.

Up the road from Portland, in the foothills of Western Maine, Oxford Casino has been encouraging their guests to donate $5.00 to breast cancer awareness as a part of their Thursday Ladies’ Night promotion which began in March, 2014. In return, each person receives $5 in Free Slot Play. So far over $5,000 has been donated for Cans for a Cure, and that amount will grow until the final Ladies’ Night for this season on October 30.

Over the weekend, the “Q Crew” at WJBQ determined that, between cash donations like the one Oxford Casino made and the receipts from the donation of bottles and cans, the total raised by Cans for a Cure is over $31,000, setting a record for the event. This total equates to over 629,000 bottles and cans.
